By Beauregard Tromp and Anne Penketh The Judge President of the Pretoria High Court, Bernard Ngoepe, has been appointed to a newly established 11-member African Court on Human and People's Rights. The appointment Was Made at the African Union summit in Khartoum, where the Sudanese government - accused of human rights abuses in Darfur - signalled it Was ready to withdraw its candidacy to chair the AU after five countries withdrew their support. Judge Ngoepe recently presided over a civil application brought by families of the 70 mercenaries who reportedly launched a failed coup attempt against Equatorial Guinea. Attorneys representing the families argued that the men, then being held in Chikurubi Prison in Zimbabwe, should face trial in South Africa as extradition to Equatorial Guinea could mean the Death Penalty. The application for the South African government to intervene Was turned down by Judge Ngoepe.
