Whittaker says she thrives on helping others - Richmond Review

As a young child growing up in Barbados, Patricia Whittaker says she Was always helping people.Whether it Was helping seniors with their shopping or reading to them, Whittaker says she’s always had that calling to be a community-minded person.“I had a friend tell me recently ‘It looks as though everything you’ve done as a child has led to where you are today,’” said Whittaker, 48.The Liberal candidate for the Delta-Richmond East riding in the Jan. 23 federal election, Whittaker says her progression into politics, which started when she Was assistant to former Richmond MP Joe Peschisolido, came naturally following years as a community volunteer.She’s worked with the Richmond Women’s Resource Centre and organized programs for seniors in Richmond.“Out of community work, you become an activist,” she said. “You feel the pain of the people you’re working with. You get angry and say ‘I’ve got to fix this.’”That meant stepping up to the table and becoming a part of the process, which she did first hand as a Richmond school trustee.
