Natural Science holds wisdom of ages By Dick WarnerI SOMETIMES meet people who seem to think that there’s something rather frivolous about having an interest in nature and that naturalists tend to be wimps. I meet this attitude quite often in secondary schools, almost never in national schools and occasionally among adults. It’s a very ancient prejudice. When Plato died 2,353 years ago his star pupil, Aristotle, set up the Peripatetic School at the Lyceum, just outside the walls of Athens. He Was soon joined by Theophrastus, who Was another former pupil of Plato’s and 15 years younger than Aristotle. These two men were the first modern naturalists. They also lectured and wrote about politics, ethics, rhetoric, astronomy and mathematics ... but natural history Was their passion. Aristotle Was the first zoologist and Theophrastus the first botanist. And both men were criticised by their contemporaries for devoting too much time to animals and plants at the expense of More ‘serious’ subjects.
