Separate studies by academics Vesile Senol, Demet Unalan, Yusuf Ozturk and Fevziye Cetinkaya has shown that during pregnancy and even before it, women in some regions of Turkey are exposed to traditions and practices that are not only not helpful to their Health but actually harmful to it. Some practices carried out, especially for pregnant women in the belief that they will be beneficial are: "The woman is given heavy physical work throughout the duration of her pregnancy. Immediately following birth, some women are dunked three times into hot Water to supposedly relieve pain. Sometimes a donkey saddle is strapped around her stomach. To prevent unwanted pregnancies, mule toenails, Honey and/or horse flies are mixed into a woman's Food. Lemon, salt, Chicken feathers, pebbles and even trash are put on a woman's vagina to prevent unwanted pregnancies."
