Girl, 6, left behind, dies in Newark fire - New Brunswick Home News Tribune

NEWARK: — When a fire broke out in a small apartment building here early this morning, authorities said 15 people scrambled to get out alive.But in the chaos, six adults living in one apartment didn't grab a 6-year-old Girl who was being baby-sat there. City firefighters ran though the smoke and haze trying desperately to find her, but by the time they did, it was too late.The Girl was pronounced dead shortly after 2 a.m. at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Authorities believe the Girl, whose name was not immediately released, died from smoke inhalation."She wasn't burned. But when we handed her over to EMS, she was pretty lifeless,'' said Thaddeus Kennedy, spokesman for the Newark Fire Department. "Me personally, I don't know how six adults can run out of a building and leave a little Girl.
