Testifying at the former governor's racketeering trial for the defense, Sister Helen Prejean described Ryan as "a man of honesty and integrity." Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer barred the 66-year-old nun from mentioning the issue that brought her together with Ryan -- the crusade to repeal the Death Penalty in America. Pallmeyer has ruled the issue is irrelevant to charges Ryan steered state contracts and leases to friends and got free vacations and gifts in return. Before leaving office in 2003, Ryan declared the state's capital Justice system Was "haunted by the demon of error."
