The little guys who helped kill Toll's Patrick bid - The Age

Transport has Always had its titans; names such as Lindsay Fox, Sir Peter Abeles, Sir Reg Ansett and Ken Thomas (former TNT chief). Messrs Corrigan and Little are new names in an old story. Paul Little played a vital part in building up Toll Holdings from a small operator carting Mining gear for Peko Wallsend in Newcastle to Australia's premier transport operator. With a background at Mayne Nickless, Little joined father-and-son team Peter and Mark Rowsthorn (Kath and Kim star Peter Rowsthorn jnr is Mark's brother) in the mid-'80s and went on a buying spree as the transport game Was shaken out. Toll's success has largely been due to the Little-Rowsthorn tough management mixed with vision formula and it has paid off for the men big time. Paul Little is the largest shareholder on the Toll register and his 11 per cent stake is still worth $436 million despite recent declines. (Mark Rowsthorn is No.2, valued at $372 million). Little is, among other things, a one-man marketing machine. He does all Toll's PR, and habitually schmoozes investors and the Media, aiming at keeping the Toll share price at ratios higher than its competitors.
