Minoxidil and Hair Loss

Minoxidil, the generic form of Rogaine, was the first over the counter, non-prescription drug to treat hair loss in both men and women. The original manufacturer of Rogaine, Pharmacia and Upjohn were recently acquired by Pfizer. Since the original patent period, free from competition, expired in 2000, other pharmaceutical companies have made the generic form of Rogaine available to the public at significanly lower costs. Minoxidil is identical to the name brand Rogaine yet without the price tag. Some still feel more comfortable using the name brand product and we can understand that. Pfizer stands behind every product they sell.

Retin A and Minoxidil

The internet is an amazing resource. It has helped those who suffer with hair loss to find out information that they would have otherwised have been embarassed to ask about. In most cases, people would go on and not ask the questions that need to be asked. In the late 1990's, a doctor specializing in hair loss treatment, Dr. Lee, began adding the acne medication Retin A to Minoxidil in varying dosages. According to his "test" and to some of his patients, the cocktail of Minoxidil and Retin A made their hair regrowth more vigorous than with Minoxidil alone. Unfortunately, the FDA has not studied this and as such there is no official over the counter version available to the public.
