A project entitled “Petals and Pills” was completed by eighth grader Sarah Davis. She hypothesized that “scientifically developed antibiotics would be More successful at obliterating Escherichia Coli [than naturally occurring substances].” She found that the natural oils she tested (oregano oil and tea tree oil) most effectively prevented growth of bacteria, but the commercially available antibiotics of tetracycline, penicillin, and erythromycin performed better than other ‘natural’ substances (carob powder, olive leaf extract, neem oil, grapefruit seed extract, goldenseal root extract, colloidal silver).
