Don't rest easy yet. A new wave of influenza, along with its attendant sniffles, shivers, coughs and fatigue, has been detected in pediatricians' offices, Nursing homes, schools and emergency rooms from New York City to the Hamptons. Flu season has finally arrived. It's late. But it may still hit hard, doctors say, especially among children. "We've got over 35 cases, at least, confirmed" in his office in the past two weeks - the first significant outbreak this winter, said Dr. Greg Gulbransen of Oyster Bay Pediatrics. Pediatricians' offices may be on the front lines of the flu trend, because rapid-test kits can give reliable results in minutes, while many hospitals and state-monitored labs use a slower, More thorough test, health officials said.
