Several states already have passed laws requiring all schools to open within a few days of Labor Day. Florida's Legislature is being asked again to set a uniform starting date, but this year's effort has More momentum. Members of the tourism industry, including Daytona Beach's Bob Davis, head of the local Hotel Motel Association, have teamed up with a group of parents, mostly from South Florida, to push for the change. A bill supporting the change, sponsored by Rep. Dan Gelber, D-Miami Beach, recently won approval of the House Education committee.
