Pain and anger ran across Querido Arias’ face as he thrust his right fist into the air and described the tragedy in New Orleans that forced Family members out of their homes following Hurricane Katrina. About 200 Northdale Magnet Academy students sat glued to their chairs, quiet, some teary-eyed, as they listened to Arias’ poetic reading of his work, “Gumbo.” The “toxic gumbo” that invaded Arias’ home and thousands of other residents in New Orleans was “a disaster that did not have to happen,” he told students. Several relatives and a friend died during and after the storm from various causes, he said. “Katrina slit the Big Easy’s wrist.” He described his feelings of helplessness and pain and of moving out of state temporarily. “I’ve cried so many waters; I’ll make the toxic waters seem purified,” he said. Arias’ is among six displaced New Orleans high school and college students who are part of a team of slam poets who toured and conducted readings and writing workshops Jan. 13 at three high schools and at one middle school.
