6,000 new cases of cancer in children ever year - Daily Times

By Tanveer Sher KARACHI: Every year More than 6000 children between the age of one month and 15 years are found suffering from different types of cancer, according to oncologist Uzma Imam, in charge of the oncology ward of the National Institute of Child Health (NICH).Talking to Daily Times on Tuesday, She attributed the situation to the genetics factor, environmental problems, frequent exposure of children to X-rays, radiation caused by high-tension wires over localities and viruses, specially the ebstein-barr virus. She said leukaemia (blood cancer) was the most Common type of cancer affecting children and in newborns it was mostly congenital leukaemia. The other types of Common cancer affecting children, she said, were gland cancer, kidney cancer and eye cancer. "In Pakistan the eye cancer incidence is abnormally high, up to 6 percent, which may be due to the Common practice of interfamily marriages," Dr Imam said. She said the signs and symptoms of cancer include prolonged fever for More than three weeks, pallor (deficient blood), body ache, specific spots on the body called purpura caused by platelets and glands enlargement.
