Classic games receive revival at library - Rockford Register Star

ROCKFORD — Saturday was 9-year-old Hussein Alzubaidi’s first time playing Senate, an Egyptian board game dating back thousands of years. But after about an hour of play, he was beating Gary Gentzel, the grown-up who taught him how to play the game.It didn’t take long for Hussein of Rockford to get hooked on the game, which Gentzel described as a cross between checkers and Chess, and ideal for developing planning skills in youth.“I think it’s better than anything I’ve ever played,” Hussein said.Hussein participated in the Games Around The World program at the Rockford Public Library’s Rock River Branch. Nearly 20 children, ranging in age from 7 to 15, played a host of board and card games with origins in different countries, including Chinese checkers, dominoes, Chess, card-based Mille Bornes, Clue, Chutes & Ladders, Bingo and Mancala.The event was a success by the measure of library clerk and coordinator Gail Vye, who said similar Events would normally attract fewer than 10 people.Vie said she helped organize the event to serve as a platform for adolescents and Teenagers to participate in — a demographic she admitted often goes overlooked in Rockford libraries.
