MANGALORE: The entire week the district police were on their toes what with their unending war against the proliferating crime in the city. The week started with shocking reports of college students being arrested for involvement in as heinous a crime as extortion. The students were running errands for thugs involved in fugitive don Bannanje Raja’s extortion business. The arrests show that the tentacles of crime have spread to the city’s campuses and students are being increasingly drawn into the vortex of crime. Increasing mobile phone thefts, easy access to narcotic substances, inability of the youths to distinguish between the good and the evil –– all these make the campuses a fertile ground for breeding crime. What causes concern is that there is an organised crime network in the district ready to carry out any heinous acts.
