FIA ditches Belgian Grand Prix - Car Today

• A1 SA jacked up for Jakarta As world champion Fernando Alonso prepared for the defence of his world championship at Jerez on Wednesday, the F1 fraternity Was rocked by news that the Belgian Grand Prix had been dropped from the F1 calendar for the second time in four years. While Alonso set the pace on the second day of this week's test session in the South of Spain, Formula One’s governing body, the FIA, announced that the season had veen shortened to 18 races following the cancellation of the Spa-Francorchamps event. The race had been in doubt after its promoter filed for bankruptcy last October, but negotiations took place between the local council and Formula One surpremo Bernie Ecclestone. Ecclestone claimed he Was prepared to act as promoter, but further doubts over the race emerged last month. The historic 7-km circuit, nestled in the Ardennes forest and famous for its Eau Rouge corner and Bus Stop chicane, required a significant upgrade ahead of September 17, but with so little time before the event, that would have meant the cancellation of the profitable 24-hour race and DTM event in favour of holding on to the loss-making GP.
