The Barcelona testing paddock Was alive with rumours that Germany's Markus Winkelhock may have signed to join the Midland MF1 team in the role of test driver. The former DTM and World Series by Renault driver tested impressively for the Silverstone-based squad before Christmas but, with Nicky Pastorelli already inked into the third driver position, a place on the squad for Winkelhock - or any of the other young hopefuls tried out by the team - seemed unlikely. The Dutchman's situation is compounded by the recent influx of Dutch talent into F1, with Christijan Albers occupying One of the Midland race seats and countryman Robert Doornbos also involved with the Red Bull Racing team, albeit as third driver. Just how Winkelhock fits into the set-up, which seems to reveal a new financial partner or supplier each week, remains to be seen.
