By MIKE MONSON © 2006 THE NEWS-GAZETTEPublished Online January 21, 2006 CHAMPAIGN The city of Champaign has reworked its economic development program to make sure that Industrial projects that involve new Construction, but primarily involve job retention, can still receive economic incentives. City officials said the moves, approved by the Champaign City Council this week, will help fill gaps in the city's economic development program. And the revised incentives will help in The Atkins Group's effort to land a 350,000-square-foot distribution center that a local company wants to build, according to Mark Dixon, director of real estate for The Atkins Group, a local development firm. "The company is still evaluating their options," Dixon said. "It's a local company. We're still in the competition." Dixon declined to name The Company, as did city officials. But Dixon said the incentive changes, though modest, will help the city's cause. "The city of Champaign and Champaign County, they're not flush with a lot of economic development incentive tools," he said. "This does add a tool.
