Forget about the cold, drab European winter, Qatar has all the sun, sand, and cycling in the sports capital of the Middle East you can handle. Stage One ran today in a More or less crescent shape from Khalifa Stadium in the capital city of Doha, to Al Khor Corniche, north of the city on the Persian Gulf for a total of 141 km. A total of 17 teams, 9 of which come from the Pro-Tour, were on the starting line, with 8 riders each. The current World Champion, Tom “Tornado” Boonen Was resplendent in his rainbow jersey, looking happy to be away from the Belgian weather in the middle of the winter. He couldn’t help but smile as well, as he had won Friday’s Doha Grand Prix, the 108 km race which precedes the Tour, narrowly beating last year's winner, Phonak’s Robert Hunter and the old man of the sprint, Erik Zabel.
