By the end of today there will be 83 fewer employees at Weyerhaeuser’s large-log sawmill along the Chehalis in Aberdeen. The last log Was scheduled to be processed this afternoon.The complex dates back to 1925 when the Schafer Bros. bought the property and enlarged a mill that had gone bankrupt. The small-log portion of the landmark facility will continue to operate with about 140 employees.For Weyerhaeuser employee Lynn Aue, who Was laid off early this morning, the people who are losing their jobs aren’t just another statistic. They have faces. Names. She knows each and every One of them.“I think today is going to be pretty bad,” the 52-year-old single mother of two said. “Monday Was the first day where it really hit me that this is real … really going to happen. People have just been kind of stunned, like we’re the Walking dead.”“A lot of people are dreading the last log going through that big mill. We keep telling ourselves, ‘It’s the end of an era.’ ”“There is life after Weyerhaeuser,” she said. “It’s just going to be different.”Weyerhaeuser announced the shutdown in October as part of a series of mill closures around the United States and Canada. - More available
