Coal Mining deaths are uncommon, but there have already been More deaths in West Virginia this year than in the past two years. There were 22 coal Mining fatalities in the nation during 2005, with four in West Virginia and six in Kentucky, according the Mine Safety and Health Administration. The numbers were somewhat higher in 2004, when there were 28 coal Mining fatalities nationally, with 11 in West Virginia and six in Kentucky. Those figures include Underground, surface and open-pit mining.
