Asian bond markets coming of age - Manila Times

An Asian Bond Conference was held in Hong Kong in mid-November last year, where the participants assessed the status and prospects of the region’s bond markets and gave prescriptions on how to further develop and improve the markets’ Performance. In his statement, Hong Kong’s Secretary for the Financial Services and the Treasury, Frederick Ma, provided a diagnosis of why the Asian bond markets have been performing so well. This also gives an implicit prescription on the key elements of the Strategy for the markets’ further development—just continue and strengthen what the region has already been doing right. First, there seems to be a general agreement among the Asian economies on the importance of developing and deepening capital markets. There has been a marked shift in focus, particularly after the 1997-98 Financial Markets, away from traditional bank and equity financing toward More novel and longer term debt instruments (such as asset securitization and the like).
