Trucks are surer bet than SUVs - Louisville Courier-Journal

Ford says it wants to be "America's Car Company," but apparently that doesn't mean giving up on trucks.Ford's announcement yesterday of plans to close 14 plants, cut production and eliminate up to 30,000 jobs by 2012 offered some positive news for workers at its Kentucky Truck Plant in eastern Jefferson County. And the Louisville Assembly Plant avoided cutbacks despite sagging Sales of its top product, the Explorer sport utility vehicle."We will build on our strengths, including increasing our product investment to fortify our F-Series truck leadership," said Mark Fields, Ford executive in charge of the restructuring at headquarters in Dearborn, Mich. Kentucky Truck Plant makes Super Duty F-Series trucks, vehicles such as the F-250, F-350 and several commercial truck models.Ford spokeswoman Susan Krusel said the F-Series will get More frequent redesigns. The Super Duty line is scheduled for a makeover late this year. The lighter F-150 pickup was last redesigned in 2003 for the 2004 model year.Catherine Madden, an analyst with Global Insight in suburban Boston, said pickup competition should increase in the next two years as Toyota prepares a new version of its Tundra pickup and GM and Dodge ready new versions of their trucks.
