Because of its extensive touring schedule, the Ailey company has been Instrumental in bringing Brown's work to audiences who do not customarily attend modern Dance concerts. When the troupe first performed Brown's soulful "Grace" in Berkeley in 2000, The Work heralded a dancemaker of rare gifts. Brown has reclaimed "Grace" for his own troupe this season, reducing its performers from 12 to eight, but retaining the piece's gripping musical mix of Duke Ellington, Fela Kuti and Roy Davis Jr. The final ensemble, as the dancers achieve an apotheosis to Jennifer Holliday's recording of "Come Sunday," remains a defining moment in the new generation of African American choreography.
